Family History
Schaal Dairy Farm is a fourth-generation dairy farm. The family farm originated in 1844 with a land grant to James McDonald. The McDonald family, relatives of Virginia, sold the farm to Harvey and Virginia Schaal in 1961. Mike and Kathy Schaal purchased the farm in 2000 from his father, Harvey Schaal. In 2002, Mike & Brian formed Schaal Dairy Farm LLP. Brian and Renee purchased the dairy partnership from Mike and Kathy in 2021. Together Brian and Mike work daily to manage herd health, milk quality, nutrition, and cropping within Schaal Dairy Farm.
Schaal Dairy Farm employs three full-time employees and additional seasonal employees. The farm has 400-cows and farms 700-acres growing corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa. Cows are milked twice per day and fed a total mixed ration. The cows live in a free-stall barn bedded with sand, and Holstein and Jersey cows make up their herd. Schaal Dairy Farm educates local youth with school tours and the annual Food for America event with Burlington FFA for over 15 years.
Mike and Kathy have three children, Greg, Brian, and Emily. Greg is married to Tracey, and they have four children: Makenzie, Ian, Matyson, and Bayley. Greg works for Fabick Cat and does maintenance on the farm machinery. Brian is married to Renee, and they have two children: Michael and Ashley. Brian has been a partner of the Schaal Dairy Farm since 2002. Renee assists on the farm and has been a crop insurance agent for 21 years. Michael is a junior at Iowa State majoring in agriculture, is a member of AGR, and actively contributes to the farm. Ashley is a junior at Burlington High School, and she is involved with 4-H, FFA, FBLA, and daily farm chores. Emily is married to Joe Pavlovich, and their first child, Robert, arrived on June 9th. Emily is a high school science teacher at Brookfield East High School.
