Frost Farms Profile
Frost Farms is a dairy, forage, and grain farm in Waterford, WI, where the Frost family has farmed since 1835. Today, sixth-generation brothers Stewart and Spencer Frost own and operate the farm, which milks 650 cows and spans 1,900 acres. Over the years, the Frosts have learned that a thriving farm requires attention to the needs of their cows, the community, the environment, and their employees.
The Frosts' father, Paul, always reminded them that "cows give milk recreationally," meaning that if cows are well cared for and happy, they will reward you with milk. To ensure this, the cows are housed on sand beds, equipped with activity trackers, and cared for by a skilled team. The Frosts also focus on genetics through practices like genetic testing, sexed semen, embryo transfer, and beef on dairy to produce the highest-quality, healthiest cows.
In the community, the Frosts contribute by sponsoring events, volunteering, cleaning roads, and fostering positive relationships with their neighbors. They prioritize sustainability by implementing practices such as cover cropping, buffer strips, minimal tillage, and utilizing an all-concrete manure pit to protect the soil and water. To cultivate a motivated workforce, they offer employees housing, fair pay, bonuses, meals, transportation, and even horses.
Since taking over the farm in the early 2010s, Stewart and Spencer have increased milk production per cow by 20%, all while maintaining roughly the same amount of land for feed production. They are hands-on, feeding cows every day to stay connected with their livestock and employees. Located just 30 minutes southwest of Milwaukee, the Frosts take pride in running a successful farm in an area of America's Dairyland where dairy operations are increasingly rare.
